New Journalism is â€Å"Journalism that features the authors subjective responses to people and events and that often includes fictional techniques meant to illuminate and dramatize those responses† (Webster). As mentioned in the Krakauer’s author’s note at the beginning of his book, he does his best to remain impartial and unbiased, but with a story with so many holes and uncertainties, he had to make many assumptions about real life Chris McCandless’s chara cter, and about the thought process and events that took place. Krakauer gathers his facts by following McCandless’s tracks, meeting and interviewing anyone who new or had seen Chris during his adventure. Through these interviews, Krakauer gained lots of information, but with that developed more questions, forcing Krakauer to improvise and make logical conjectures even as he worked with McCandlesss known traits. In these respects, Into the Wild combines all the useful, factual information Jon Krakauer gathered and combined it with the ideas and assumptions he created in his head to pour out an engrossing piece of Literary Journalism. This is demonstrated when Krakauer writes â€Å"[Chris] probably understood that if he was patient and waited, the river would eventually drop†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (171). This line was created with deductive reasoning in relation to the evidence. As untrue as it could potentially be, including it does not affect or change the events to follow that are true. This use of fiction is entirely acceptable for the genre. On numerous occasions throughout the book, Jon Krakauer reaches to relate McCandless’s life to his own in attempt to understand what he could be thinking. Early in the reading, the author explains the pressure and stress Chris was under by the overbearing control his father had over him. He uses this fact to back up his personal belief that part of Ch ris’s reason for abandoning society was to escape and experience an extreme form of ‘no pressure’. On page 155 Krakauer explains how he thinks himself and Chris were â€Å"similarly affected by the skewed relationships [they] had with [their] fathers†, this quote was said, too, as away of defending his idea that his, and more importantly Chris’s, adventurous spirit was fuelled by their families. This reasoning is only speculation of course, as Krakauer never fails to remind readers that he can’t be certain of what McCandless was thinking, the inclusion of these ideas only keeps readers entertained, and for some, inspired. However, the goal of this novel is not to cause its readers to wonder further about what Chris was thinking and why, it is to answer those already developed questions. Krakauer makes the decision to connect himself to McCandless as a way of giving his readers possible if not definite answers to the gaps in information. He do esn’t want to leave the reader unsatisfied or needing more. Krakauer’s assumptions don’t only stem from his personal experience. Chris McCandless documented his daily experiences in his journal, the 113 days spent alone in the wilderness. His entries were not long extensive hour by hour descriptions, but often one to ten word shorts. Alongside these, he also wrote his thoughts and ideals in notes inside the books he brought with him. After a long investigation into these entries, Krakauer seems to be trying to find any possible meaning behind even McCandless’s simplest words. In one, â€Å"‘HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED’† (189), is written, a quick thought Krakauer gives plenty of attention to. In a way that almost seems to be grasping at straws, due to all the back tracking, Krakauer offers his analysis of this quote. The just of it is that he believes this quote explains Chris came to the realization that societal isolation was not the key to happiness, but other people is what makes something grea t. He explains that with this Chris would have been wanting to return to the real world and be a little more vulnerable and open. This is an extreme assumption to make with little to no context from McCandless, but like before, Jon is sure to reiterate that this is only his opinion and can not be proven correct or incorrect. These types of not entirely accurate pieces of information are also completely justified. Including ideas like this, especially at such crucial moments of Chris’s journey, shows readers that McCandless may have come to a positive realization. With his death coming so soon after writing this quote, it offers readers comfort in that he did not pass without accomplishing at least one of his goals, finding happiness. In a way, Krakauer throws readers a bone by giving them a sort of ‘happy out’, despite not being certain of the truth behind McCandless’s journal entries. Chris McCandless’s journals were not only nonspecific regarding its content, but they also neglected to note the date. His entries kept track of time only by numbering them one through one hundred thirteen, presumed to be the amount of time he spent in the woods (Read, Pictures). This may be due to Chris losing track of time, forgetting the day, or perhaps not wanting to know, but none the less Krakauer takes it upon himself to add that bit in. Through the novel, Krakauer makes references to specific days, he says on May 22nd Chris lost the crown from one of his molars (164), and on July 28th McCandless finished the book he was reading (189), and so much more. These days are impossible to be certain on unless McCandless mentioned them specifically. Krakauer speculates the date he claims are facts based on the interviews with people who met Chris during his travels, post cards that went out prior to the beginning of Chris’s true disappearance, and the date commonly assumed to be the last he was seen, April 28th, 1992 (7). If someone interviewed got a day wrong, or Chris was out of it enough to miss a day in his notes, or so many other possibilities, Jon Krakauer’s entire timeline could be giving false information and he leaves no comment of potential inaccuracy. It’s understandable that he made this writing decision to help readers, and possibly himself, keep track of the events order of occurrence. Into the Wild is written in the order that Krakauer found his information; therefore, it is very easy to be lost along the way. However, an explanation of the meaning of the numbered passages would have sufficed and this entire uncertainty could be avoided. Krakauer never straight up lies to his readers about events that occurs or their order, but he fluffs large amounts of every chapter with speculations, judgements, and guesses. Almost always reminding the audience that what he writes shouldn’t be totally taken as fact, he manages to keep readers interest with just the right amount of dramatization and types of false advertising for Into the Wild to still be classified as a non-fiction story. The eerie telling of McCandless’s adventure could not have been handled better. From offering all facts available, meshed with every possibility Jon Krakauer could imagine, this use of literary journalism created a memorable tribute to a journey most people could never imagine.

But, who was Lewis Carroll? Charles Dodgson Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) was a mathematician and logician who lectured at Oxford University. He balanced both personas, as he used his study in the sciences to create his eminently strange books. Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a charming, light book, that reputedly pleased Queen Victoria. She asked to receive the authors next work and was swiftly sent a copy of An Elementary Treatment of Determinants. Synopsis The book begins with young Alice, bored, sitting by a river, reading a book with her sister. Then Alice catches sight of a small white figure, a rabbit dressed in a waistcoat and holding a pocket watch, murmuring to himself that he is late. She runs after the rabbit and follows it into a hole. After falling into the depths of the earth, she finds herself in a corridor full of doors. At the end of the corridor, there is a tiny door with a tiny key through which Alice can see a beautiful garden that she is desperate to enter. She then spots a bottle labeled Drink me (which she does) and begins to shrink until she is small enough to fit through the door. Unfortunately, she has left the key that fits the lock on a table, now well out of her reach. She then finds a cake labeled Eat me (which, again, she does), and is restored to her normal size. Alice, who by now has grown to a great size, stands up for the Knave and the Queen, predictably, demands her execution. As she is fighting off the Queen’s card soldiers, Alice awakes, realizing she has been dreaming all along. Review Carrolls book is episodic and reveals more in the situations that it contrives than in any serious attempt at plot or character analysis. Like a series of nonsense poems or stories created more for their puzzling nature or illogical delightfulness, the events of Alices adventure are her encounters with incredible but immensely likable characters. Carroll was a master of toying with the eccentricities of language. One feels that Carroll is never more at home than when he is playing, punning, or otherwise messing around with the English tongue. Although the book has been interpreted in numerous ways, from an allegory of semiotics theory to a drug-fueled hallucination, perhaps it is this playfulness that has ensured its  success over the last century. The book is brilliant for children, but with enough hilarity and joy for life in it to please adults too, Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a lovely book with which to take a brief respite from our overly rational and sometimes dreary world.

That is to be intelligent, real and loving. Holdens problem is with his heart. It was broken when his brother died. Now Holden goes around the world as his fake self, wearing his mask. Holden is looking for love, peace and understanding. He is scared to love because he is afraid he might lose it like he did with his brother. That is the reason for Holdens love of the museum, he feels safe because it never changes it always stays the same. Holden is troubled with the pain of death, it effects every aspect of his life causing him to not care about the future, himself or anyone, except Phoebe and Alley. The theme of alienation is demonstrated by Holden. He alienates himself from the world because he fears change and false people, he wants love and security. Holden alienates himself from all the changes that occur around him. Holden isolated himself when he didnt go down to the seats for the final football game at Pency. He isolates himself because he gets kicked out of all the schools he goes to. All those changes scare Holden off, he becomes afraid to feel secure. Holden also alienates himself because he trusts no one, he thinks everybody is phony. When Holden was in a bar and he lied and said he had to go, just to not talk to his brothers old girl friend; Holden thought she was annoying and left the bar even though he didnt feel like it. Holden is also alienated by his inability to love. Holden seems not to care about his old girlfriend Sally, he told her he loved her but he didnt mean it. He told her she was a pain in the butt; he had complete disregard for Sally feelings, he jus t walked away to do something else. Holdens fears and insecurities can be traced back to the death of his brother Alley. All of his repressed feelings about his brother exert an influence upon Holdens actions. He cant trust or love anything or anyone because he is afraid that they will die and leave him tormented and vulnerable. Salinger is trying to show the reader the confusion anger and frustration of loosing a loved one, and how it can effect a persons life. Salinger is saying that a person needs reciprocal love to be happy and healthy. Holden is miserable because he lost his brother whom he loved very much. When Alley died Holden smashed up the windows in the garage so bad that even years later he still cant make a good fist. Maybe Holdens ability to love was taken away along with his brother. Without Holden having a healthy relationship with love going back and forth he becomes an emotionless heap of flesh with no direction or motivation. The author is illustrating his version of hell. Hell to the author is being surrounded by phonies and not being able to care. Seamus Heaney`S Digging The Modernist theme of mechanization, brought on by the beginning of World War I and the technological revolution of the era, manifests itself powerfully and completely in the language of Seamus Heaneys first poem, Digging. From various literary devices, as well as graphic imagery the mechanization of the human spirit comes to life in the form of his father, and grandfather. The past and present become one, with the common bond the honest work of the Irish poor. In his own way, and with his own pen, Heaney develops the idea of mechanized men who, through the drudgery and repetition of their lives, create a life for them and their families, taking pride in their work, and acceptance of their fate. He develops seamlessly the idea of a man-machine, a hybrid of automation and human, married by toil and tool. Likewise, Heaney writes this as a way to tie himself to his ancestors in the British Isles, illustrating the power that they wielded with shovel and sweat, making their contribution no less enlightened than his own. In his first poem, Heaney develops the image of mechanization and automation that follows the poor of his country, through graphic imagery, sound, and literary mastery. Heaneys imagery throughout the poem echoes the automation of the workers, illustrating the type of work that they do as something that could be done by machinery. Titling the piece Digging immediately highlights for the reader the verbal connotation of the work, and puts the theme of work, and of manual labor into the limelight. As well, Heaneys use of the word gun to describe his squat pen in line 2 places the emphasis on machinery allowing a comparison of the human condition to present technology. This theme continues throughout the poem, as Heaney likens his fathers act of digging to that of a machine, as his father nestled on the lug, the shaft/Against the inside knee was levered firmly. (ll.10-11) These words take the labor out of the realm of man, by using mechanical terms to d escribe the marriage of shovel and man, creating an altogether different image of a type of robot tearing up sod. While he describes this straining rump, Heaney takes this man out of the realm of men, and into a realm of manufactured workers, a realm of repetition, a realm of stooping workers, their humanity set aside to finish the job at hand. However, while Heaney describes the toil of his father, he also ties it to the alike labor of a past generation, namely his grandfathers, used to nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods/Over his shoulder.(22-23) This juxtaposition of past and present illustrates the monotony of the work involved, and how things take time to change. Heaney creates the transition between his father and grandfather in a two-line stanza that highlights the pride of these men, and how their automation gave cause for praise from their descendant, Heaney. Their legacy of hard work, however mechanized, illustrates the value placed on labor in their society. While He aney creates the idea of men-machines through visual images and parts, he also creates a very auditory world, one that echoes the act of a factory, or a piece of farm machinery. From the first stanza, with its clean rasping sound, the readers ear can almost hear the whir of a lawn mower, or something of that nature, cutting and slicing. (3) The rhythm of Heaneys fathers digging highlights the monotony of the act, the incessant meter of his practiced spade. This coincides with the sounds in the prior stanza, as the authors first recollection is an auditory one. Later in the poem, the squelch and slap/Of soggy peat, continues the idea of a machine chugging away at the turf, creating again the essence of a machine oblivious to the conditions of the work men. The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci Essay The Renaissance, which took place in the fifteenth century, was an important time for artist. For many years, art had not played a significant role in the lives of individuals. Instead they had worked hard and worshiped a god that they felt was out to destroy them. Then came the Renaissance when art was reborn and wisdom was encouraged. Artist began to experiment with new techniques and materials. Many of the creative people of the day looked at their subjects in a different way. They wanted them to look realistic instead of the stiff figures in earlier works. Leonardo Da Vinci, a true Renaissance man, was no exception. The Last Supper was one of his most famous works and embodied the characteristics of the Italian Renaissance. The Renaissance movement followed the Gothic art of the Middle Ages, also known as The Dark Ages. After the lack of learning of the Middle Ages there was a complete turnabout in the Renaissance. It was as if there was a burst of enthusiasm for learning and experimenting with every new idea that artist could fathom. There was no shortage of patrons to support these skilled and talented individuals of the art world. There was a renewed interest in the ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. It seemed to those whose art was produced in the Renaissance felt that it was more beneficial to study the works of the ancients instead of the previous period. In ancient Greece and Rome, there was a keen interest in the human being. They felt that mankind was the most interesting subject for an artist. Man was complex and there was always something to be learned about him. In an attempt to present man in the way that he had never been before, the artist of the Renaissance period delved into the practice of experimenting with perspective. It was only through painting a three dimensional figure that man could be seen as the complex being that he was. In order to make a figure seem more than one dimensional, chiaroscuro, or the use of light and dark to create depth. Duke Ludovico Sforza was a patron of Da Vinci. He commissioned him to paint the mural of The Last Supper on the wall of his dining hall. He accepted the commission and began his work in fourteen ninety-five. As was true to Da Vinci’s nature, he wanted to experiment with new materials. He covered the wall with a sealant, gesso, and then painted the mural with tempura paint. Like many experiments, this one proved to be unsuccessful. While the painting was a masterpiece, it did not hold up well and it was not long after he finished in fourteen ninety-eight that the painting was already showing signs of deterioration. The mural has been restored many times over the centuries and has now recently been restored to what is hoped to be an accurate one. However, it was a difficult task since not all of the ones who tried to restore it had the same objective as leaving in its original form. The painting itself is of the Passover that Jesus spent with his twelve disciples just before his arrest and crucifixion, later known as The Last Supper. Religious subjects were quite popular in Italian society because Italy was the center of the Roman Catholic Church. In this painting Jesus has just informed his disciples that one of them would betray him. This shocked and confused his disciples because they wondered how one of the twelve could go against the man they had given up everything for, who was the one who would commit such a vile act, and would the culprit be them. The look of surprise and disdain is on their faces. Jesus is placed at the center of the painting and then he is flanked on each side by six of the disciples. This creates a balance to the stark room, which is the setting of the last meal that Jesus would share with his original twelve disciples. Judas is just to the left of Jesus and is holding his finger in a way that would suggest he is being challenged. The others are discussing the situation amongst themselves. The disciple to the right of Jesus has been the center of discussion lately with the popularity of the book and movie The Da Vinci Code. The disciple of all of the focus is John, the one who was the â€Å"beloved† disciple. Da Vinci painted him to look extremely feminine. Dan Brown questioned the identity of this figure. He suggested that instead of John, the identity was Mary Magdalene. Perhaps Brown was right, but it also makes sense that Da Vinci actually meant for the figure to be John. John was the youngest of the disciples and he could have emphasized his youth by purposely painting him in a feminine light to stress his youth. The setting of the painting is the upper room of the Passover meal. The room is dark and stark. Da Vinci brings light to the painting by using light and vivid colors for the clothing of the disciples. Light blue is the predominant color with pink, green, and yellow used as complimentary colors. The viewer’s eye is automatically drawn to the center of the painting which is Jesus, but is shortly drawn out in both directions because the colors seem to elongate the view. Jesus and the disciples have a multi dimensional appearance as was popular during the Renaissance. However, they were not accurate in the sense that they appear European. These men were Israelites and their complexions and hair would have been much darker than they appear in the painting. This is also a trait of Renaissance art. The artist tended to make their biblical subjects look like the artist. Leonardo Da Vinci and his painting, The Last Supper, are typical examples of the Renaissance movement. His courage to experiment and yet still focus on religious themes that were popular at that time was enhanced by his superior artistic talent.
